People that we discover have committed unforgivable acts no longer need to be celebrated. Whether I'm able to separate the art from the artist depends on how egregious their offense. I can't hear an R. Kelly songs without getting the creeps. I still listen to my favorite Brian McKnight songs because he's just an ass.
Men with money and power often use it to take advantage of women. They get away with it for so long because the people who could stop the abuse benefit from protecting them or have too much to lose if/when no one believes them or cares.
We want to believe that the art we enjoy is created by good people when it's usually created by deeply flawed people who are full of contradictions. Being forced to face reality can feel like a slap in the face, but just because the artist couldn't live up to the ideals they presented, doesn't necessarily mean they didn't want them to be true. Great artists aren't superheroes, they are just good at what they do.
